Challenge
A major coconut oil mill focused on exportation faced a critical challenge when it discovered that its products could not meet the European Union’s strict food safety regulations. The issue centered on the non-compliance with allowable levels of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH), mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH), and polyolefin oligomeric saturated hydrocarbons (POSH) set by EU authorities. These substances, which can migrate into food from lubricants used in food processing machinery and from adhesives in packaging, pose significant health concerns. Research suggests that high concentrations of MOSH, MOAH, and POSH in food can cause damage to vital organs, including the liver, heart valves, and lymph nodes. MOSH and MOAH are suspected carcinogens, making compliance even more critical.
